operates a regional pick-up and delivery route between Dover and Western Pennsylvania. The 250 to 300 mile route goes through Baltimore, Md., traffic and over moun- tains in the northeastern U.S. — ideal “hybrid country,” according to Bruce Hollendeck, vice president of strate- gic product programs at Mack. The proprietary powertrain features a Mack MP7 diesel engine equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR). The engine is integrated with a starter, alternator and elec- tric motor/generator. The 120 kW motor/generator captures energy through regenerative braking, which is stored in lithium ion batteries. The electric motor is used to assist in vehicle propulsion. In addition to driving the vehicle, the hybrid powertrain can also operate as a mobile power sta- tion for computers, lighting or other equipment, the compa- ny said. Mackhasalso developed severalhybrid refusetrucks incor- porating a similar powertrain as the Granite truck. Refuse trucks make an ideal platform for a hybrid powertrain, Hollendeck noted, due to the nature oftheirduty cycle and the number of stops per day, reaching as many as 1000 to 1200. Parker Hannifin Corp. has also seen opportunity in the refuse truck market for the same reason — the frequent stop/start drive cycle of the vehicles — but its hybrid sys- tem is significantly different, relying on hydraulic energy rather than electricity. The RunWise hydraulic hybrid technology was devel- oped specifically for refuse applications. The RunWise system incorporates a two-speed hydrostatic transmis- sion for city and urban driving as well as a direct drive function for highway driving. At low and medium speeds, the engine drives a hydraulic pump, which charges hydraulic accumulators. The pressurized fluid from the accumulators is used to drive a pump/motor connected to the rear axle that propels the vehicle. Not until the continued on page 14
ArvinMeritor, along with Navistar, Cummins and Wal-Mart, devel- oped a proof-of-concept hybrid configuration for application in Wal-Mart’s linehaul trucks. Average fuel efficiency gains range between 7 and 15%.
