BY ROBERTA PRANDI A fter withdrawing from the industrial engine markets in 2000, Peugeot Citroën Mo- teurs recently announced its intentions to re-enter the business. The French engine automobile and engine manu- facturer plans to market its Euro 5 auto- motive engines in the range below 134 hp for industrial applications. It said its engines below 75 hp will meet Tier 4 final emissions regulations without a diesel particulate filter. Dominique Desportes, technical director of Peugeot Citroën Moteurs, explained that the decision was made mainly because the diverging regula- tions for engine emissions that char- acterized the automotive and non- road markets a decade ago are now finally converging. “The segment of industrial vehicles has seen a dramatic tightening of emis- sions regulations, and the Tier 4 final step that will come into force in 2013 does very much match the Euro 5 level for automotive applications in terms of severity and needed technology,” said Desportes. Following its withdrawal as an in- dustrial engine supplier, Peugeot Citroën Moteurs still continued to sell components to automotive and indus- trial OEMs. The organization, based in Nanterre, France, has 45 employ- ees, one-third of whom are engineers. The mother company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, manufactures 15,000 auto- motive engines a day in several plants in France. Desportes noted that the company has maintained all engine capabilities in-house, including specific testing facilities.
