three in 2012 as well as other machines in its construction lineup.
the need to find the right mix of cooling
without increasing noise levels. Lower
dB(A) ratings can be a competitive
issue among manufacturers.
“It’s a double-e dged sword,” said
Rose. “We’re noted for some of the
quietest machines in the industry, and
with the heat factor and cooling you
can’t cheat physics. It’s a real design
feat to increase cooling systems with
larger radiators and bigger fans or
turning the fans faster while still keep-
ing an eye out for noise.”
Space is another constraint, as the
majority of Tier 4 interim engines will
include an exhaust gas recirculation
(EGR) system and a diesel particu -
late filter (DPF). “They tell us how
much room is required to make it fit,”
said Greg Kruepke, design engineer
at Wacker Neuson. “They tell you,
‘These are your options and you have
to fit it in there,’ which isn’t always easy
when you have a machine that wasn’t
designed for these components.”
Regeneration of the diesel particu -
late filter will — in most cases — be
passive, requiring no action by the user.

catalytic reduction (SCR) systems that
will utilize liquid urea. This is the path

manufacturers and is likely to be mir -

industry, including gen-sets.
be used in conjunction with EGR. PM

eration, converting to CO 2 and ash,
using a fuel burner. Atlas Copco uses
John Deere, Volvo, Kubota and Deutz
engines in its generator line ranging
from 19 to 457 k W.
For all of the complexity the new Tier
4 interim engines bring to gen-sets
and other types of engine-powered
machinery, it may be simple when
compared to what might occur at Tier
4 final. While many engine manufac -
l ike nearly all gen-set manufacturers, Multiquip plans to sell 2010 inventory into 2011 and
use flex credits until 2011 engines are available.
