JLG to supply U.S. Navy with Engine Installation and
Removal Vehicles (EIRV) for servicing aircraft
BY KYLE KOPPLIN
JLG’s vice president. “Its hydraulic
system provides the precision neces-
sary for placing and removing engines
on a wide variety of aircraft.”
According to JLG, the EIRV is based
on the company’s Millennia Military
Vehicle (MMV) telescopic material
handler and is designed for placing
and removing engines on many com-
mon aircraft, including the P- 3, C- 2,
E- 2 and C-130.
JLG Industries Inc., an Oshkosh Corp. company, recently an- nounced an initial order to build
26 Engine Installation and Removal
Vehicles (EIRV) for U.S. naval facilities
around the world.
“The JLG EIRV is the newest addi-
tion to a line of combat-proven access
solutions,” said Denny Buterbaugh,

The EIRV platform is powered by
a four-cylinder Cummins QSB4.5T diesel
engine rated 110 hp that drives a ZF
4WG98TS automatic transmission with
four forward and three reverse speeds.
The four-wheel drive, four-wheel steer
machine also incorporates ZF axles with
a limited slip differential in front, along
with Bridgestone model VUT 2 Star tires.
The hydraulic system is based on
a Haldex tandem gear pump. Both
sections of the pump have a displace-
ment of 1.79 cu.in./rev and deliver
19. 5 gpm at the rated speed of the
machine. The pump is driven off the
back of the transmission and also
drives an Eaton steering pump.
The result is a 20. 66 ft. long x 8. 33
ft. wide x 7.83 ft. high machine with
an operating capacity of 6000 lb. that
has a 16. 33 ft. turning radius and is
capable of operating in many types of
terrain, the company said.
The working section of the EIRV
includes a three-stage telescopic boom
with a horizontal outreach of 29 ft. and
a lift height of 42. 33 ft., which is oper-
ated with a hand-controlled multifunc-
tion joystick.
Additional features include a 45 gal.
fuel tank, heated and air-conditioned
cab, and adjustable suspension oper-
ator’s seat. dp
