Another company providing aid
in the fight to clean up the Gulf
is Caterpillar. According to the First
Response Team of America (FRTA),
Cat’s 299C compact track loader has
been a valuable tool in their cleanup
efforts. FRTA is a private organization
that is seeking to provide expertise,
equipment and resources to assist in
the cleanup.

Powered by a Cat C3.4T engine rated 90 hp, the 299C is designed to negotiate both sand and water. A major function of the 299C loader in the Gulf cleanup has been to ensure that pumps are positioned correctly. The machine is also being used for the setup of “tiger” dams along the coast by transporting dam material and light towers, allowing FRTA to work around the clock.

“It’s a race against time,” said Tad
Agoglia, FRTA founder and president.
“We are here along the Gulf Coast rac-
ing against time before the oil spreads
to the entire coastline. We’re working
24 hours a day constructing dams in
an effort to save wildlife preserves,
beaches and marshes. We have to try
and make a difference wherever we
can to protect our shores.”
Gravely, a business unit of Ariens
Co., Brillion, Wis., and a manufac-
turer of zero-turn, walk-behind and
outfront lawn, mowers, tractors and
accessories, has seen one of those
accessories put to use in the Gulf
cleanup. The sand-cleaning head
on the Gravely Rapid E two-wheel
walk-behind tractor is being used to
remove oil from beach sand.
