each 1400 hp or more. By our count
they numbered 45 built in the U.S.
and Canada during 2009 in which we
determined the engines were actually
laid. This compares to 54 in 2008, 52
in 2007, 58 in 2006, 56 in 2005 and
43 we counted in 2004.
The top 10 diesel powerboat builders in terms of numbers of boats
produced in 2009 changed dramatically as a result of severe cutbacks
in production, with a number of the
major builders that consistently made
the top- 10 list over the years. Indeed,
only two builders, Sea Ray and Martini
Marine (Ranger Tugs), produced
more than 100 boats in 2009.
The top five builders together accounted for 40% of all North
American 2009 diesel powerboat production compared to 38% in 2008,
40% in 2007 and 44% in 2006. The
top 10 builders as a group comprised
53% of the total versus 54% in 2008,
53% in 2007 and 58% in 2006.
Brunswick’s entire Boat Group,
which comprises Sea Ray, U.S.
Marine, Hatteras, Albemarle and Cabo,
produced, by our count, just over 200
diesel-powered boats in 2009, representing about 19% of the total North
American production. This compares
with our estimates of nearly 750 boats
produced in 2008.
Of the nearly 1100 boats produced
during 2009 in North America, we
determined that there were near-
ly 1800 diesel propulsion engines
sourced compared to about 5100 in
2008, 7300 in 2007, 8900 in 2006 and
9500 in 2005, the peak year.
