FREEWHEEL OPTION FOR
BLACK BRUIN MOTORS
Internal valve system means no additional components needed for freewheeling mode
BY BRENT HAIGHT
Black Bruin has introduced optional internal freewheeling valves designed for its BB and
BBC Series hydraulic motors. According
to Brandon Pickering, marketing and
product manager at North American
Hydraulics, the integral freewheeling
valve simplifies the hydraulic circuit
because no additional external freewheeling valves or pumps are needed
for the freewheeling mode to occur.
North American Hydraulics is a
marketing and service arm for hydraulic component and gearbox manufacturers throughout the world. It is the
exclusive North American supplier of
Black Bruin products.
“You can freewheel this motor
mechanically without the need for an
external pressure source, achieving
minimal power loss,” said Pickering.
“Other motors require a pressure
source, which allows for the freewheel
mode to occur. These designs require
additional pumps, more complicated circuits and an external freewheel valve.
“Black Bruin’s BB and BBC Series
motors now offer an internal freewheeling valve, which simplifies the system.
Shifting is faster and more reliable.

Black Bruin offers low-speed, high-
torque motors with power outputs
from 20 to 350 hp, operating speeds
up to 500 rpm and pressures to 6500
psi. Its motors are typically used for
hydrostatic transmission or as final
drives in agricultural equipment and
trailers, forestry machinery and trail-
ers, road construction and mining
equipment, and various other applica-
tions such as winches.
Black Bruin motors can be equipped
with mechanical freewheel springs.
When there is no pressure in the
working lines of the motor, the springs
are designed to push the pistons
down into the cylinders and hold them
there. Thus, no pump output is needed to keep the motor freewheeled.
The motors can be disengaged or
re-engaged while operating.
Black Bruin BB and BBC service
motors offer displacement ranges from
15. 3 to 768.8 cu.in., maximum pressures from 5000 to 6525 psi, multiple-speed capability with shift-on-the-fly,
and multiple brake options. The internal freewheel valve is available in both
open and closed position center.
