revealed that the standard cast-iron backhoe boom needed
to be changed to enable easier maintenance and attach-
ment capability. So, Case redesigned the N Series boom,
developing it from a combination of steel casings and high-
strength, low-alloy steel plating. The new boom — which
is being manufactured in the company’s Burlington, Iowa,
facility — is larger than the company’s previous model,
allowing it an increase of 4 in. in forward reach, as well as
a 2 in. deeper dig depth.
The bucket has also undergone a change, going from two-
pin to single-pin positioning, which will help to improve rotation
and power, the company said.
Case has also added a new Power Lift option to
the 580 Super N Wide Track and 590 Super N mod-
els. According to Rob Marringa, marketing manager,
Case Construction Equipment, “Power Lift channels the
hydraulic power directly to the boom with the touch of a
button. As a result, our backhoe lifting capabilities out-
perform competitive models by as much as 39% while
running at low engine rpm.”
In an effort to improve safety around the machine and
the job site, Case incorporated floor to ceiling cab win-
dows and high-intensity lights on all of the N Series mod-
els. According to the company, the lighting package can
improve performance by up to 28%, providing improved
visibility and overlapping field coverage. The side light-
ing offers 45° of rotation to deliver lighting to more work
space, Case said.
“The new N Series machines light up the entire perim-
eter of the machine,” said Marringa. “This means the
entire side-to-side range of backhoe movement — and
beyond — is illuminated. This not only gives the operator
a better sense of control, it also boosts productivity at any
time of day or night.”
Additional standard features of the N Series include
adjustable seats, ergonomically placed controls for reduced
operator fatigue and all-season heating and air-condition-
ing systems.
Dennis Zentner, owner of DRZ Contracting, Delta, British
Columbia, Canada, was one of the test operators. “The 580
Super N Wide Track loader/backhoe performed well on
grading, trenching, backfilling, heavy lifting, hole patching
and rock breaking,” he said. “Its Power Lift ability saved me
from using an excavator.
“Case did a great job designing the backhoe boom,” he
added. “It is an improvement, and definitely stronger than
competitive models I’ve seen. The new machine has better
visibility from the cab and better airflow. The new cab win-
dows are a good safety feature. You can talk with someone
without their having to walk around the machine.”
The N Series machines are manufactured at the CNH/
Case manufacturing plant in Burlington and are available
for order at all Case dealers in North America. dp
