PURIFYING THE PORTS
Cargotec and ST Kinetics develop LNG-fueled and hydraulic
hybrid terminal tractors for use in port operations
BY BILL SIURU, PHD, PE
In these days of tightening emis- sions standards and increasing regulation, there is great pressure
on ports located near large urban
areas — especially in the United
States — to reduce emissions. A
major focus of this cleanup is on
reducing emissions from material handling equipment such as yard hustlers
and trucks that haul cargo containers
to and from the port areas.
Cargotec, a global supplier of
cargo handling equipment head-
quartered in Helsinki, Finland, has
developed a new low-emissions line
of yard hustlers through its Kalmar
brand. The line includes liquefied
natural gas-fueled and hydraulic
hybrid drive terminal tractors that,
according to the company, can help
to meet the ever-stricter regula-
tions without the need for expensive
exhaust aftertreatment systems.
