The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has awarded $5 million to
the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy
(SACE) to help Southern truckers and
small businesses buy cleaner big rigs.
Funding provided through the Smart Way
Clean Diesel Finance Program will guarantee loans used to buy retrofitted, used
tractor-trailers at Rush Truck Centers
throughout the South. According to the
company, these tractors are designed to
run cleaner than other rigs of the same
vintage, in order to improve air quality
along Southern roads.
Rush Truck Centers and SACE will
determine select trucks to be retrofitted, and buyers will have the option of
choosing to retrofit a pre-2007 vehicle
from other trucks in inventory at the
dealer’s locations. The project, called
the Clean Trucks Make Cents program,
will focus on the EPA Region 4, where
levels of air pollution do not meet National Ambient Air Quality Standards for
ground-level ozone, the main component in smog. The program is scheduled
to run through December 2014.
The U.S. Dept. of Energy will be accepting applications for up to $184 million that will be used to accelerate the
development and deployment of new
efficient vehicle technologies. Projects
will span the spectrum of technology
approaches, including advanced materials, combustion research, hybrid-electric systems, fleet efficiency and fuels
technology. According to the DOE, the
projects will be designed to reduce U.S.
dependence on foreign oil, save drivers
money and limit carbon air pollution.
2G-Cenergy has received an order
for a 370 k Wh biogas combined heat and
power (CHP) cogeneration plant to be
installed at the University of Wisconsin-
Oshkosh. The plant is expected to pro-
vide the campus with 4183 MW of ther-
mal energy and 3071 MW of electricity
per year, with any excess power sold to
the grid, the company said.
