SENSORS & CONTROLS
This rating light — usu-
ally located at the base of
the boom arm — alerts the
operator if the crane is safe
for use. It will shine green
for safe conditions, yellow
as conditions approach
unsafe operation and then
red when conditions are
likely to cause damage or
unsafe lifting practices.
situation approaches closer to unsafe usage conditions,
the light will turn to yellow, and then red when conditions
are likely to cause damage or unsafe lifting conditions.
The receiver also has the ability to monitor other CAN
modules incorporated on the machine — including J1939
engines, boom angle sensors, input/output modules and
remote monitoring devices.
GPS remote monitoring, Thornton said, is a technological
development that GSNA has been testing and is planning
to implement in crane trucks. The company has partnered
with Premier Deicing, Marinette, Wis., on a project to moni-
tor Premier’s deicing machines being used by Alaska Air at
airports in Washington and Alaska.
“During a deicing event machine operators must log in
to the system, which monitors who they are, the tailwing
number of the plane they are working on, when the task
begins and how much material is used,” said Thornton.
“These tools are in place on the OEM equipment, and
are useful to the fleet manager. They communicate on
the same CANbus protocol as the system controller, but
are also transmitting information out to the Internet for
fleet management utilities.”
According to GSNA, there are several value-added ser-
vices that can be applied through GPS remote monitoring
for fleet managers in the work truck industry. For example,
fleets can now be “GPS location monitored,” allowing
managers to send the closest unit to handle the situation
— saving both time and resources. Additionally, tracking
of work and load history can determine how frequently a
machine is underutilized, which enters into future buying
decisions for its user. Remote monitoring diagnostics tests
including predictive and preventive maintenance trends
can also be run on machines — reducing service travel
expenses and ensuring the machine is ready for operation
when it is needed.
