MOBILE HYDRAULICS
TUROLLA BACK AS TAND-ALONE BRAND First showing of open circuit gear pumps, motors and fan drives since relaunch
BY MIKE OSENGA
A“new” hydraulic brand name with a mere 63 years
of history will be reintro-
duced to the off-highway
mobile equipment at this
month’s IFPE show, part of
ConExpo-Con/Agg.
The Turolla line of hydraulic gear pumps, now called Turolla
OpenCircuitGear, is one of four businesses that Sauer-Danfoss recently
separated out to stand alone in the
marketplace as new brands (see
January, Diesel Progress).
Thus while carrying the tagline,
“Member of the Sauer-Danfoss
Group,” TurollaOCG is operating as
an independent entity. As such, IFPE
will mark the brand’s debut as a stand-alone operation, though it will be part
of Sauer-Danfoss’ booth at the show.
TurollaOCG manufactures opencircuit gear pumps, motors and fan
drive systems with plants in Bologna,
Italy; Povazska, Slovakia; and Ames,
Iowa. “TurollaOCG is in many ways

about deliveries and lead times,”
said Domenico Traverso, vice presi-
dent Stand Alone Businesses at
Sauer-Danfoss. “We have installed a
‘fast lane’ production line in Bologna
and we are at about 95% on-time
delivery. We are striving for the
shortest lead times, best delivery
performance, first to quote, specify
and prototype on a machine.”
Turolla was founded in 1948
in Bologna and was acquired by
Sundstrand in 1981, which became
Sauer-Sundstrand in 1987 and as such
was part of the Sauer and Danfoss
merger in 2000. The major market for
its gear pumps are agricultural, material
handling and construction equipment.

keting at TurollaOCG, said that among
the products TurollaOCG will feature
at IFPE are the SGM2, SGM3 and D
Series fan drive gear motors. These
motors feature integrated reversing,
proportional valves, a bi-directional
motor for remote HIC reversing valves,
shaft seal protection, cast-iron construction, outrigger bearings for slewing, high vibration and oscillating fan
drive applications.
Arndt said these features can help
OEMs achieve Tier 4 and Stage 4
emissions compliance. “With Tier 4
and Stage 4 regulations, we’ll have
applications with higher-horsepower
fans, more aggressive duty cycles
and higher temperatures,” he said.
“Because new vehicle systems will
reject more heat, the fans operate
longer and more often for cooling.”
The new fan motors run both direc-
tions to quickly clean radiators of dirt
and chaff. “The base models already
helped recapture some of the lost
power from the constraints imposed
by emissions standards,” Arndt said.
The reversing function integrates
a solenoid-operated directional control valve to reverse fan rotation and
a proportional relief valve to regulate
fan speed. Dual shock/anti-cavitation
valves limit pressure spikes during sudden reversals and allow flow to bypass
the motor as the fan winds down.
The directional control and pres-
sure relief valves are available in
two flow ranges, minimizing pressure
losses in the system.

plete line can be found in the accom-
panying table. dp
