changes and gear-to-gear shifting, Cat
said. A switch in the cab allows the
operator to choose be-tween an automatic differential lock system and a
manual system that can be controlled
through the right joystick. Multidisc
brakes for the M Series 2 graders are
designed and supplied by Cat.
The ACERT technology used in the
M Series 2 models combines refined
fuel, air-management and electronic
systems with the Cat NOx-Reduction
System and Cat Clean Emissions
Module (CEM). The CEM includes
a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a
diesel particulate filter (DPF) and the
automatic Cat Regeneration System
(CRS). According to the company,
each component is designed for use
by Cat, and is built either in-house or
by its supplier Tenneco.
Like its predecessor, the M Series
2 uses the Cat control system, which
incorporates two electronic joysticks
that control the signals sent to the
hydraulics system. Each joystick has
triple redundancy built into the electronic circuitry and a separate electrohydraulic valve dedicated to each
cylinder. According to the company,
the control system requires approximately 80% fewer hand and wrist
movements than the multilever and
steering wheel-operated units of the
past — resulting in enhanced operator comfort and efficiency. Electronic
vertical adjustment of the joystick
control pads is also available to help
individual operators find the optimal
position to work.
According to Cat, the left joystick
controls machine functions including
direction, gear selection and steering,
in addition to controlling the left moldboard lift cylinder. The right joystick
controls most of the drawbar, circle
and moldboard (DCM) controls.
Beginning in June, the company
will offer its Cat Grade Control Cross
Slope system on the M Series 2
machines. The system integrates traditional grade control with standard
machine components at the factory,
Cat said. It will be factory-installed and
calibrated, as well as fully upgrade-able and compatible with the company’s AccuGrade system.
The standard cab for the M Series
2 graders includes air conditioning,
angled doors and a sloping rear
window that allows visibility from the
heel and toe of the moldboard to the
ripper, as well as a noise rating of
70 dB(A).
A standard moldboard on the 140M2
and 140M2 AWD models measures
12 ft. long; while the moldboard for
the 160M2 and 160M2 AWD measures 14 ft. Base weights for the four
machines range from 37,911 lb. in the
140M2, to 40,098 lb. in the 162M2
AWD grader.
According to Cat, production of
the new M Series 2 motor graders is
being shared between the company’s
new focus facility in Little Rock, Ark.,
and its plant in Piracaba, Brazil. dp
