ENGINE TECHNOLOGY
The compact brushless actuator
can serve as the heart of a variety
of key engine sub-systems such as
the turbocharger, EGR valve or cooler bypass valve, BorgWarner said.
On turbochargers, the actuator can
be used in both variable geometry
turbocharger (VGT) and wastegate
applications. On VGTs, it can be
used to precisely control the vane
position. For wastegate systems, the
actuator controls the valve position
and can use BorgWarner-developed
“smart seating” algorithms to ensure
that the valve is held in the closed
or seated position when needed.
This also allows the unit to adapt to
gradual changes in mechanical components due to wear or the effects of
temperature cycling.
The actuator can also be teamed
with butterfly-type EGR valves to
meter the exhaust gas flow in a pre-
cise manner, the company said.
Electric actuation reduces response
time to 150 milliseconds, significantly
faster than pneumatic actuation sys-
tems, according to the company. A
proprietary electrical connection sys-
tem, developed by BorgWarner and
already established as reliable in on-
and off-road environments, improves
durability and can be customized for
multiple applications, the company
said. The actuator is available for both
12 and 24 V systems.
