The performance of Dana’s new TZL series
powershift transmissions is optimized when
it is combined with Dana’s complete range
of front axles, drivelines and controls, the
company said.
output drop, the TZL16 transmission
incorporates a 13. 6 in. stamped-steel
single-stage torque converter, along
with two 295 lb.ft. SAE C pump drives
with a variable pump ratio and a wider
9. 5 in. pump spacing, which enables
OEMs to take advantage of optimum
displacement system pumps and
hydraulic plumbing, Dana said.
The TZL16 transmission incorporates
a standard SAE 2 flywheel housing and
can accommodate input speeds up to
3000 rpm. Standard reduction ratios
are 4.351: 1 (first), 2.307: 1 (second),
1.135: 1 (third) and 0.653: 1 (fourth), and
the wide ratio spread results in high
first-gear tractive effort and maximum
fourth-gear travel speeds, Dana said.
The load-sensing shift logic also allows
for automatic kick-down from second to
first gear during bucket filling or other
activities where increased tractive effort
is required. It is also designed to prevent internal overspeed conditions and
provides complete monitoring of system
parameters such as oil temperature
and clutch and lube oil pressure. Spring
apply, hydraulic release disc brakes or
drum brakes are available as parking
brake options.
Maintenance issues are minimized
through the internal plumbing, which
reduces oil leaks, the company said.
The oil filter can either be integrated into the transmission housing or
mounted remotely. Diagnostic codes
provide for simplified troubleshooting.
In an effort to maximize application
flexibility, the TZL transmissions’ physical dimensions are as compact as possible. On the TZL 16, the length from
the bell housing face to the rear flange
face is 34. 3 in., maximum width is 23. 4
in., and the drop from the flywheel
center input to the output joint is 21. 8

in. Assembled weight, including the bell
housing, is 1333 lb.
The transmissions’ performance is
optimized, the company said, when it is
combined with Dana’s complete range
of front axles, drivelines and controls.
Dana has also focused on developing, as much as possible, local
suppliers that are able to provide
key components. The new transmissions incorporate machined, gray iron
cases and select gearing made in
China, while clutch packs, valving and
electronics are imported from Dana’s
European operations.
The TZL18 transmission is a higher-capacity variant of the TZL16 and
is designed for TZL60 wheel loaders. It shares the same architecture
as its smaller sibling, with enhanced
internal components, and Dana said
this enables manufacturers to use the
same chassis structure for ZL50 and
ZL60 class loaders with minimal installation changes.
Dana said the Spicer TZL16 transmissions are available now for testing
by OEMs, with production scheduled
to begin in the third quarter of this year
at the Dana Wuxi facility. The TZL18
is expected to begin production shortly
afterward, the company said.
While targeted mainly toward domestic manufacturers in China, the
company said that equipment manufacturers, including some in North
America, have shown interest in the
transmissions for machines dedicated toward emerging markets. dp
