Generac Power Systems has introduced GenReady, a load center panel designed
to make it easier to add an automatic standby generator set to a residential application, according to the
Waukesha, Wis.-based manufacturer.
Typically installed either during new
home construction or when upgrading
electrical panels, the GenReady load
center is designed to take the place of a
traditional 42-circuit electrical load center at a comparable cost. It features 18
essential circuits that will be protected
by the generator during an outage —
30 with the use of tandem breakers.
This system is a two-in-one product
that Generac said eliminates the need
for a separate emergency load center
and automatic transfer switch.
The GenReady panel utilizes standard Siemens panelboard components and is UL Listed. It is compatible
with generators rated up to 125 Amps
or 30 k W. Further, multiple GenReady
panels can be supported by a single
generator. GenReady is available in a
NEMA 3R version for outdoor applications and can also accept 1 in.
Siemens and Cutler Hammer breakers in the load center.
Generac said there are three versions of the new GenReady system.
With the GenReady Basic package,
the panel is installed without the
Generac EZ Transfer Operator. It
replaces a home’s main distribution
panel at no additional labor cost, and
costs only about $50 more than a regular distribution panel, said Generac’s
Cathy Olig, senior channel manager,
residential. This option could save a
homeowner thousands of dollars in
upgrade costs when a generator is
installed later, Olig said.
With the GenReady Advanced sys-
tem, the load center panel is installed
with the EZ Transfer Operator. All

fuel and electrical lines are installed
to the planned generator site along
with the generator pad (if required).
The home is then completely wired
and ready for the addition of a generator in the future.
For the most complete system,
everything in the GenReady Advanced
level is installed along with an automatic standby generator. The home’s
selected circuits will be backed up by
generator power anytime utility service is interrupted. “Homebuilders are
especially interested in this product,”
Olig said. “They see it as an easy
way to make homes generator ready,
and it perfectly positions the builder to
offer a complete generator upgrade to
his customers.” dp
