Following acquisition from Cummins, Nelson Global Products aims to
leverage long heritage in engine exhaust systems
BY MIKE BREZONICK
For decades, the name “Nelson” seemed nearly synonymous with exhaust systems. Since
its founding in 1939, the Wisconsin
company had established itself as a
significant supplier of engine exhaust
systems and components serving the
on-highway, off-highway and stationary
and industrial engine markets.
Indeed, its success was a big reason
why the name disappeared for a time,
as the company was purchased by
global engine giant Cummins in the late
1990s, making it part of the company’s
Components Group under Cummins
Emission Solutions.
But when CES’s focus shifted more
toward aftertreatment products such
as diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and
selective catalytic reduction (SCR) sys-
tems that were deemed more critical
to Cummins strategy going forward,
the Nelson business became available.
Earlier this year, Wind Point Partners,
a private equity firm headquartered in
Chicago, Ill., reached an agreement
to acquire the Nelson business as part
of its Global Tube operations, which
includes National Tube Form, Southern
Tube Form and Peoria Tube Forming.
