New Engines
Perkins launched its first Tier 4 final
emissions compliant engines, the new
400F Series, at this year’s ConExpo-Con/Agg in Las Vegas. Perkins said
the 400F Series engines meet EPA
Tier 4 final regulations for engines
above 25 hp and EU Stage 3b regulations for engines above 49. 5 hp.
The 400F Series will begin production in September 2012 to ensure availability ahead of the January 2013 effective date of the legislation. The engines
will initially be manufactured at Perkins’ Griffin, Ga., facility. As demand grows,
the 400F diesels will be produced alongside the 400D specification engines in
Perkins’ 400 Series plants in the U.K., U.S., and China to provide 400 Series
product availability for customers in all regions.
The compact three- and four-cylinder 400F
Series engines produce up to 61 hp, providing a
seamless choice for OEMs developing new models for the Tier 4/Stage 3b market, Perkins said.
Perkins said the 400F engines also ease
the transition with a 97% component carryover
from engines designed for the previous tier. The
only addition is the aftertreatment that has been
designed to be as compact as possible, with flexible mounting arrangements to ease installation.
Also new is the Tier 4 compliant 850 Series of
compact four-cylinder, 3. 4 L engines that generate 40% more power and up to 60%
more torque than the existing 800 Series. These engines open up possibilities for
OEMs who require more horsepower than the 400F Series provides, Perkins said.
Two models are available — the 854E-E34TA, a turbocharged, charge-air-cooled
engine and the 854F-E34T, a turbocharged unit — that provide power from 60 to
