ALTERNATIVE POWER YEARBOOK
Delphi’s solid oxide
fuel cell auxiliary power
unit mounted on an on-highway truck.
Inclusion on the EPA’s Verified Technology List would
mean the agency has approved Delphi’s SOFC APU for
use in diesel retrofit programs, positioning the device to
address further market applications. Delphi is focusing the
development of SOFCs that generate electrical power for
commercial vehicles, stationary power generation and military applications.
Delphi said it is currently field testing its SOFC APU
with several heavy-duty truck manufacturers. In future
variations, Delphi said, it will also be able to power vehicle
components, which are currently belt driven, such as
engine cooling fans and water pumps. This would remove
loads from the primary engine and provide improved overall
vehicle fuel economy and engine performance.

Company News
Eaton Corp. offers a complete lineup of hybrid power systems for commercial vehicle applications, including electric-hybrid, plug-in electric-hybrid and hydraulic-hybrid power
systems. Most recently the company has signed a long-term
agreement to design and supply Argentine bus manufacturer
Tecnología Avanzada en Transporte S.A. (TATSA), with a
hybrid-electric power system for use in buses in Argentina
and throughout South America.
The alliance developed six preproduction units initially,
followed by a production plan to manufacture 20 additional units this year. The companies will match Eaton’s
hybrid system to TATSA’s 40 ft. bus model. The hybrid
system combines a Cummins diesel with an electric motor
