Company News
Vycon has provided eight of its
Regen flywheel systems to ports
operating within the U.S., the company said. The Regen flywheel systems will help port operators meet
new EPA requirements to reduce
emissions from RTG cranes and fuel
consumption reduction requirements.
Mobile cranes get their power from
an onboard diesel generator set, which
provides the required voltage and frequency to variable speed ac motors
through an inverter. During lift cycles,
peak power is drawn from the generator, and during lowering and braking all
regenerated power is sent to a resistor
bank where it’s dissipated. By using
Vycon’s Regen flywheel system, that
energy is captured, stored and used to
move the next container.
The flywheel has the ability to
discharge and recharge quickly
during power outages, Vycon said.
The company’s portfolio includes
the VDC and VDC-XE units, which
the company said together with the
Regen model have logged 5 mil-
lion discharge and recharge cycles
in a variety of power applications
requiring the units to discharge and
recharge every two minutes.
Vycon’s Regen flywheel system installed
on a gantry crane.
The VDC and VDC-XE are used as
uninterruptible power systems (UPS)
for data centers, hospitals, universities,
broadcast studios and manufacturing
plants worldwide. The flywheel tech-
nology is also being evaluated for light
high-speed rail applications that have
the potential to save energy costs,
support utility company’s peak power
demands and lower capital costs in
new construction, Vycon said.
