This trailer is equipped with Smart Truck Under Tray components, which according to the
company help to compress and accelerate incoming airflow and inject high-energy air into
the trailer wake, reducing the drag on the tractor-trailer.
of a trailer can create a large amount
of drag, the wake of a flat back trailer
accounts for approximately one-third
of the total drag on the tractor-trailer,
the company said. The SmartTruck
system reduces drag by compressing and accelerating incoming airflow, then injecting high-energy air
into the trailer wake. Without the use
of the system, air can impact the
suspension components and can
actually cause damage, Smart Truck
said. The installed devices bend the
air around and under the suspension, which increases velocity and
directs air to the ground.
The 75 lb. front tray fairing attaches
to trailer cross members and Z-rail in
a fixed position in front of the trailer
axles. It measures 97 in. long, 52 in.
wide and 29 in. high. The 46 lb. axle
fairing attaches to trailer axles and
measures 76 in. long, 30 in. wide and
3. 5 in. high. The 60 lb. rear diffuser,
measuring 38 in. long, 52 in. wide
and 30. 5 in. high, is attached to trailer
cross members in a fixed position
at the rear of the tractor. The 15 lb.
aerodynamic rain gutter is attached to
the rear of the trailer top and allows
fast-moving, high-energy air over the
trailer to turn a corner and be pulled
down into the trailer’s wake. This
decreases the wake’s size and drag
without adding an appendage that
may hinder loading and unloading,
the company said.
