In 1958, Cargotec Corp., head- quartered in Helsinki, Finland, assembled its first terminal tractor at its new Ottawa, Kan., facility.
At the time, the company said it was
capable of producing an average of
three vehicles per month.
The pace has picked up rather
remarkably since then. In 1999,
Cargotec manufactured its 25,000th
terminal tractor. Just 12 years later,
the company managed to double that
total — rolling out its 50,000th terminal
tractor in Ottawa earlier this year.
Aside from the sheer numbers,
over the years Cargotec and its sub-
sidiary company Kalmar have been at
the cusp of advancements in terminal
tractor design. Key enhancements
have included incorporating automat-
ic transmissions, rear-door entry, air-
conditioning systems, power cab tilt
and ABS brakes.
