established two additional service
organizations — Midwest Mechanics
and OEM Micro. Midwest Mechanics is
dedicated to serving researchers and
universities with test facility design,
construction and contract measurement services. OEM Micro meanwhile,
was founded to serve industries with
micro-scale manufacturing processes,
including medical, aerospace, precision optics and defense training systems, among others.
When considering a new business
relationship, OEM said it begins by
assessing if the potential customer is “a
good fit” with the company’s strengths
and culture. “If they are viewed as a
good fit, credit is considered,” said S.
Mark Tyler, OEM Fabricators president. “Assuming the relationship still
looks good, we develop a customer
profile that addresses all facets of the
supplier/customer relationship.
“This profile considers everything
from documentation preferences
to packaging, internal contacts to
undocumented rules. The profile
becomes our rules of engagement
for that customer. Once the definition of the relationship is completed, we use conventional Customer
Relationship Management (CRM),
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP),
and Quality Management processes
to manage the workflow.”

Currently, OEM’s Woodville facility
covers more than 60,000 sq.ft., while
the Neillsville location encompasses
54,000 sq.ft. Approximately 320 full-time employees fill the two locations.
The company also utilizes contract
workers when capacity designates the
need, said Smith.
The company has recently announced that in the coming year it will
be expanding its Woodville facilities
by adding an additional 12,000 sq.ft.
to its north-side buildings. Housed
in the new addition will be a large
paint booth, 5 ton overhead cranes,
large-scale machining equipment and
expanded welding bays. The addition
is estimated to add 50 new workers in
the facility, the company said.
The company’s Neillsville facility is
also scheduled for some changes, as
OEM said it is to be “reconfigured to
achieve a high throughput to better fit
customer needs.” Additional lifting and
machining equipment will be added,
with the majority of the new equipment
being CNC lathes and vertical machining centers. The facility will also be
looking to add several members to its
workforce — estimating an additional
70 employees will be needed to operate the new equipment.
Hoping to further increase the number of qualified workers for future
growth, the company said it is active
in an ongoing workforce development effort with the Association of
Equipment Manufacturers (AEM),
Wisconsin’s technical colleges and
several other organizations to promote technical, manufacturing and
construction careers. “At the root of
OEM’s work with Wisconsin’s technical colleges is our ongoing need to
add skilled team members,” Smith
said. “Our hope is that we can convene all of the individual organizations and work together in order to
have a more dramatic impact.” dp
