less than 20% five years ago. Along
with the strong growth in sales of mini
excavators and wheeled excavators,
wheeled loaders have made a strong
recovery since a period of flat sales
in 2008-2009, but their proportion of
total sales has continued to decline
to below 45% compared with 65% as
recently as 2005.
Last year, sales of crawler dozers
passed 10,000 units for the first time,
making China by far the largest market
in the world for this product. All types
of road machinery, asphalt finishers,
compaction equipment and motor
graders moved ahead to record their
highest-ever levels of sales. Mobile
crane sales grew substantially with
strong demand from a wide variety of
applications, in particular, railway construction. Backhoe loaders and skid-steer loaders, two niche types of compact equipment, saw useful increases
in volume, but both from a low base.
Not everything was a winner, how-
ever. Sales of dump trucks of all types
saw a 3% fall last year, although the
small articulated dump truck sector
saw a slight increase with more sup-
pliers entering the market; sales of
rigid dump trucks declined because of
the imposition of industry regulations,
and because of increasing competi-
tion from on- and off-highway trucks.
