additional costs of aftertreatment necessary for the diesel gen-set to comply
with Tier 4 final emissions regulations.
The operating cost is also changing
because diesel fuel prices are on the
rise while natural gas prices are falling.
Additionally, the specific output for
natural gas engines has increased significantly faster than for diesel engines
so that the power produced per liter
is converging on diesel-like numbers.
These are important factors and contributing to a significant shift in sectors
of the North American gen-set market
that have traditionally only been fueled
by diesel.
Imports: For the smallest gen-sets,
the foreign invasion continues. The
market for gen-sets continues to grow
in North America but domestic manufacturers have not been the direct
beneficiaries of much of that growth
since imports have grown at a faster
rate than the market. Lower costs are
being driven by an increasing penetration of imported units.
Originally starting with small portables, imports are moving up the
power range spectrum. Additionally,
many manufacturers have more or
less given in and come to the realiza-tion that they cannot compete at the
small end of the line, opting instead
to supplement their product lines with
imports through private label agreements, joint ventures or from their
own offshore locations.
Channels Of Supply: Dealers have
survived the recession and recovery
over the last two years by managing
inventory and engaging in rebuild
Innovative packaging consider-
ations as well as improvements in
materials make it possible to greatly
reduce gen-set noise levels. The end
result of these significant improve-
ments in noise reduction has served
to make gen-sets more acceptable in a
wider variety of settings. Many manu-
facturers are now offering sets geared
toward commercial use with noise lev-
els similar to those common in tactical
military applications (< 70 dbA at 7 m).
